Volkswagen have released their first images of their vision of the automotive world 20 years from now.

“Our designers and developers have created three innovative vehicle concepts exclusively for this web special in order to illustrate the automotive world of tomorrow. We have called them ‘one’, ‘ego’, and ‘room.’ They give an idea of the shape that our visions of the future could take. They demonstrate how the cars of the future can communicate with traffic lights, how holographic displays in the cockpit can assist the driver and how we can generate even more driving pleasure and still keep our cars emission-free,” Jochen Sengpiehl, Head of Marketing, Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, explained.

If the Volkswagen 'Room' is a window to the future, someone better warm up the Delorean because I'm thinking I'd rather step back in time rather than forward.

Ugghh... looks like Volkswagen have decided to lodge a new challenger for my top 10 ugliest concept cars list.

The Volkswagen 'One' looks like a seat on wheels, that just may topple over at any second.

The Volkswagen 'Ego' is clearly the pick of the bunch, although I'm not sure whether I'm looking at the front or the back? I'm also guessing that in the future, windscreens are an optional extra.

Raise your hand if you remember the Volkswagen W12 concept? Volkswagen unleashed their W12 coupé concept at the 2001 Tokyo Motorshow. Complete with a blistering 12-cylinder engine, the W12 coupé was capable of 440kW at 7,000 rpm. The six-litre, large twelve-cylinder engine sat mid-mounted and could push the 1,200kg car to a top speed of more than 350 km/h. The W12 coupé boasted an impressive 0-100km/h time of less than 3.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest sports cars of its time.

The massive output power of the engine was transferred to the rear axle via a sequential six-speed gearbox located behind the engine, a classic sports car layout. The W12 coupé sat on specially developed 19" magnesium wheels with 255/35 ZR front tyres and 275/40 ZR rear tyres.

The W12 coupé featured stability control, traction control and ventilated Brembo disc brakes. The rear spoiler automatically extended once the vehicle hit 120 km/h.

The W12 coupé was said to have set many international speed records on the high-speed course in Nardo, Italy during its long distance testing.

The Volkswagen W12 coupé is definitely an impressive looking beast, and was rumored to have been considered for production. Whether or not the W12 sees production in one form or another remains to be seen.
