If you've ever seen the TV show The Dukes of Hazzard, then chances are you'll recognise the good old General Lee Charger that starred in the series. Good news for Aussie fans, one of the surviving General Lee's is up for auction through Shannons.

Driven by Luke and Bo Duke, the General Lee was used for a variety of high-speed pursuits, jumps, stunts and became a celebrity in its own right. Between 1979 and 1985, it's believed no less than 309 Chargers were used in The Dukes of Hazzard, during which they were routinely destroyed at the rate of one or two per episode while performing their punishing stunts.

Of these, it is estimated that only around 23 originals survive today, although guesstimates on the number vary.Regardless, documented General Lee Dodge Chargers are now very collectible, as shown by the record price achieved at auction last year for the original ‘Lee 1’, which sold in the US for a staggering $Aus 10.5 million.

Shannons are auctioning one of these rare surviving General Lee Chargers at the Melbourne International Motor Show Auction on Monday March 10 and estimate that it will sell for between $220,000 and $260,000.The 1969 Dodge Charger is based on an original 440-cid R/T and was converted to General Lee configuration by General Lee Enterprises in the early 1980s.

General Lee Enterprises built a small number of cars (somewhere between 8 and 11) that Warner Bros. used for promotional work and some close-ups in filming. The car subsequently spent 20 years in storage in Kentucky prior to undergoing a comprehensive restoration and was then sold to the current Australian owner last year.

In September/October 2007, the full drivetrain rebuild took place and the vehicle generally tidied up in the cosmetic department, presenting in great condition both inside and out.

The Charger will be sold registered in Victoria on 'GN-LEE' plates along with a Victorian roadworthy certificate that will be supplied after the sale. The Dodge comes with supporting documentation, including American titles.

Putting together a list of the Top 5 Car Chases of All Time was always going to be a challenging, and controversial, task.

When I first thought about this, I was thinking, how could I possibly cut it back to just five. But then, that's part of the challenge, and the final cut is sure to inspire some debate.

So here we go counting down the MotorDude.com top 5 car chase scenes of all time...

Number Five: Gone in 60 seconds - The final chase

It was hard to come up with this list without repeatedly thinking of Eleanor, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500, that is the star of the "Gone in 60 seconds" remake, that also include Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The first time I saw this movie, the final chase scene was the one thing that really stuck with me, long after my recollection of the actual plot had faded. There's just something about the car that makes this chase stand out, even though you could argue that there are far more spectacular chases out there.

WPvideo 1.10

Download!

Number Four: Matrix Reloaded - The freeway chase

For all out extravagance, it's hard to go past the massive special effects laden car chase featured in Matrix Reloaded. This chase has it all. Smashes, crashes, explosions, sword fights and cool sun glasses. I think you'd also have to describe the scene as "epic".

WPvideo 1.10

Download!

Number Three: Bullitt - The San Francisco chase

You probably won't find many top car chase films that don't include Bullitt on the list. The 1968 police/detective thriller starred Steve McQueen, and features one of the most referenced car chases in celluloid history. The extended chase scene featuring Bullitt being chased/chasing down a couple of hitman whilst driving around a "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback. This chase set the standard for car chases that all future movies attempted to live up to.

Download!

Number Two: Ronan - Car chase european style

Ronan, starring Robert De Niro, features one of my all time favorite car chases, the film itself is a cracker as well. The film features a number of european made cars including Audi's, BMW's and Peugeot's. Maybe a controversial choice for number two, however I still think that this is one of the most well filmed chase scenes that you'll ever see.

WPvideo 1.10

Download!

Number One: Die Another Day - The ice chase

When James Bond gets the engine of his Aston Martin revving as he is pursued by bad guy Zao (who drives a Jaguar XKR). What makes this chase so special? The fact they are driving around like mad men on freakin' ice and through the middle of a giant ice made hotel. How often do you see that? It's tough to top a James Bond car chase, as generally the guy 'pimps his ride' with lasers, rockets, and in this case adaptive camouflage.
