How much would you be willing to pay for a number plate?

Exactly how much would you be willing to part with for a rare or customised number plate?
The most valuable single road-going item at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show may not be the $1,050,000 Maybach 57S limousine, the exotic Versace Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, or even the pristine 1971 XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III on the Shannons stand.
Potentially, it could be two pieces of pressed and enamelled tinplate bearing the NSW number ‘6’, for which Shannons expect someone to pay over $1 million for the right to display.
"Special" number plates are now more collectible than ever with Shannons last year auctioning 50 rare vitreous enamel and 50 new Black Euro plates on behalf of the RTA at the Sydney Motor Show for a record $4.1 million. You could by quite a few Evo's for that!
Based on that result, Shannons are this year selling the "right to display" a further 50 plates for the RTA. In addition, Shannons are offering a further 12 plates for sale by private vendors, the equally collectable ‘78’ ($240,000-$320,000) and the intriguing ‘66666’ ($25,90900-$35,000) are amongst these.
Personally, I just don't "get" the whole special number plate thing. In my opinion there are far better ways to spend your money. What do you think?

[...] When I think about all the different things I could spend my money on, a car number plate does not appear at the top of my list. It’s one of those things I have because it’s required. I certainly would be forking out in excess of $1million (AUD) for the “right to display” a single digit number plate. $1 million (AUD) is what the number plate with “6″ is expected to fetch at the Shannons auction at the Sydney International Motorshow.
