Japanese motorcyclist severs leg and continues riding

Here's a head scratching auto story from a few days ago. A Japanese motorcyclist failed to notice that he'd severed his leg below the knee after hitting a safety barrier. He rode on for a further 2km, leaving a friend to retrieve his limb, before realizing what he'd left behind.
The Daily Telegraph report that:
The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, yesterday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.
He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.
The man and his leg were taken to hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.
How the guy kept riding, let alone not even notice he'd severed his leg, is beyond my comprehension!

Yeah, one would think that severing your leg would be the kind of thing you would notice!
I can just imagine going to stop and put your feet down and you realize your right leg is missing! Ouch!
