The top 5 car chases of all time
Feb 27th, 2008 by Motor Dude
Putting together a list of the Top 5 Car Chases of All Time was always going to be a challenging, and controversial, task.
When I first thought about this, I was thinking, how could I possibly cut it back to just five. But then, that's part of the challenge, and the final cut is sure to inspire some debate.
So here we go counting down the MotorDude.com top 5 car chase scenes of all time...
Number Five: Gone in 60 seconds - The final chase
It was hard to come up with this list without repeatedly thinking of Eleanor, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500, that is the star of the "Gone in 60 seconds" remake, that also include Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The first time I saw this movie, the final chase scene was the one thing that really stuck with me, long after my recollection of the actual plot had faded. There's just something about the car that makes this chase stand out, even though you could argue that there are far more spectacular chases out there.
Number Four: Matrix Reloaded - The freeway chase
For all out extravagance, it's hard to go past the massive special effects laden car chase featured in Matrix Reloaded. This chase has it all. Smashes, crashes, explosions, sword fights and cool sun glasses. I think you'd also have to describe the scene as "epic".
Number Three: Bullitt - The San Francisco chase
You probably won't find many top car chase films that don't include Bullitt on the list. The 1968 police/detective thriller starred Steve McQueen, and features one of the most referenced car chases in celluloid history. The extended chase scene featuring Bullitt being chased/chasing down a couple of hitman whilst driving around a "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback. This chase set the standard for car chases that all future movies attempted to live up to.
Number Two: Ronan - Car chase european style
Ronan, starring Robert De Niro, features one of my all time favorite car chases, the film itself is a cracker as well. The film features a number of european made cars including Audi's, BMW's and Peugeot's. Maybe a controversial choice for number two, however I still think that this is one of the most well filmed chase scenes that you'll ever see.
Number One: Die Another Day - The ice chase
When James Bond gets the engine of his Aston Martin revving as he is pursued by bad guy Zao (who drives a Jaguar XKR). What makes this chase so special? The fact they are driving around like mad men on freakin' ice and through the middle of a giant ice made hotel. How often do you see that? It's tough to top a James Bond car chase, as generally the guy 'pimps his ride' with lasers, rockets, and in this case adaptive camouflage.
What do you think? Agree? Disagree? We all know opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one, so feel free to share yours.

I think quenton taratino’s “death proof” in the grind house double feature had a great car chase at the, mostly because if the circumstances.
I am glad to see it was for movie car chases. I had a bad feeling that OJ Simpsons white bronco chase was going to be on there! =)
Good list!
I also loved the car chase in Diehard 4 with Bruce Willis.
